Job Description

Waterbird Projects

Coastal North Carolina is home to many species of marsh, shore, sea, and wading birds. To preserve these coastal species and closely monitor rare ones, the Wildlife Diversity Program conducts seasonal surveys, performs research, and protects important habitats. If you are interested in assisting with surveys, research projects, or habitat protection, please volunteer. Your time and skills will help us secure a future for North Carolina’s incredible wildlife.

Responsibilities

  • Assist biologists and staff with seasonal bird surveys along beaches, marshes, and estuaries, including counting and identifying species
  • Help monitor nesting sites for shorebirds, seabirds, and wading birds during breeding season
  • Support habitat protection efforts such as posting signage, maintaining symbolic fencing around nesting areas, and educating beachgoers about sensitive wildlife zones

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old (or accompanied by a parent/guardian if younger, depending on the role)
  • Able to commit to a minimum number of volunteer hours per season or per month
  • Willing to complete a brief orientation or training session before starting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Genuine interest in wildlife, birds, conservation, or the coastal environment
  • Patience and attention to detail, especially for tasks like counting, observing, or recording data
  • Good communication skills and a friendly demeanor when interacting with the public
