Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced IT & Infrastructure Manager to lead our organization’s technology operations. The IT Manager is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the technological infrastructure of the University of North Carolina Press and its sister company, Longleaf Services. This role requires a hands-on professional with broad technical expertise, strong project management skills, a strong and current working knowledge of IT security and PCI Compliance standards, an understanding of business workflows, and excellent communication skills. The position also requires extensive troubleshooting experience with desktop/server software, hardware and other technology issues and the ability to shift priorities as new issues arise within either company. The IT & Infrastructure Manager must also have leadership experience, as the position supervises others within a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

Systems Administration & Security

  • Ability to maintain PCI DSS 4.0 AOC, including preparation and fulfilling all documentation requests of our third-party PCI Compliance Attestation partners.
  • DNS record creation and domain name management. Utilize Qualys for vulnerability scanning and remediation in conjunction with UNC-CH ITS.
  • Administer and maintain both Mac and PC environments, including remote desktop support and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of VPN protocols.
  • Manage Active Directory, user account creation, and enforce security protocols including Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Cloud & Software Management

  • Administer Microsoft 365 (M365) including Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, and all standard Office applications.
  • Provide support for installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of Office 365 (O365) applications.
  • Provide support for our internal and external reporting system (Qlik Sense), including user set-up and maintenance.
  • Manage software purchasing, licensing, and deployment across the organization.
  • Administer and support in-house helpdesk software.

Publishing & Business Systems

  • Take an active role in managing and improving our fulfillment software systems for inventory and order management (ERP).
  • Manage online shopping carts for e-commerce operations (with third-party provider)
  • Oversee and utilize expense tracking and financial operations software.
  • Project & Personnel Management
  • Lead cross-departmental technology projects from planning through execution.
  • Supervise IT support staff, conduct annual performance reviews, and support professional development.

Requirements

  • Proven track record as administrator over Microsoft 365, Entra, Azure, as well as SAAS applications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows Server and Macintosh Server software.
  • Extensive experience with PCI compliance standards and requirements in a publishing environment, including security, and third-party testing
  • Established ability to manage an IT Department budget for both hardware and software.
  • Configuration and implementation of expense reporting system.
  • Direct experience working alongside and supervising staff. Ability to assess staff in annual reviews.
  • Hands-on knowledge of current generative AI assistants and trends. Ability to find appropriate applications of this technology within an academic publishing environment, implement same, and teach users how best to interact with AI tools in ways that adhere to internal policies and business needs.
  • Practical working knowledge of installing, configuring and troubleshooting Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server.
  • Expertise in evaluating weekly vulnerability scans and implementing changes/updates to maintain PCI compliance.
  • Experience assisting users with safe configuration of handheld devices (Smartphones, Tablet computers) for use with VPN, off-campus access and usage.
  • Applied experience in writing process documentation for end users and IT support staff.
  • Verifiable ability with problem solving and analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work across department to implement company-wide tools and procedures.
  • 5+ years of proven experience in IT management, preferably in a publishing or academic environment.
  • Strong understanding of PCI DSS requirements and documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 administration and cloud-based productivity tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and supervise personnel effectively.
  • Experience with both Mac and Windows operating systems.
  • Familiarity with publishing business processes and systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
